To help us respond quickly, please include your browser and operating system, whether you are on desktop or mobile, and the steps that led to the problem. A screenshot is always welcome.
Getting started
- Open a design in Canva and launch ChemAtelier from the Apps menu.
- Sketch your molecule using the tools at the bottom of the panel: drag on the canvas to draw bonds and chains, place rings and ready-made scaffolds from the template gallery, and change atom labels with the element picker.
- Refine your structure as needed — select part of it to move, rotate, flip, or clean it up, or paste a Molfile to start from an existing structure.
- Press Add to design to place the structure in your design as a transparent vector graphic.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit a structure after adding it to my design?
Yes. Click the structure on your design, then press Load & edit in the app panel. The structure is loaded back into the editor along with the drawing style it was created with. After making changes, press Update selected structure to update it in place.
Can I import structures from other software?
Yes. Tap the document button to open the Molfile dialog, paste a Molfile (V2000 MolBlock) from ChemDraw, RDKit, PubChem, or another chemistry tool, and press Load & place. You can also export the structure on your canvas as a Molfile and copy it to your clipboard. The V3000 format is not currently supported.
Does the app support SMILES?
Not yet. SMILES input requires 2D coordinate generation, which we plan to add in a future release. For now, please convert SMILES to a Molfile in your usual chemistry software and paste that instead.
Why does my structure have a transparent background?
This is intentional. Structures are exported with a transparent background so they sit naturally on any design, photo, or coloured shape. The background colour you see in the editor is a viewing aid only and is never exported.
How do I draw a structure for a dark background?
Tap the moon button in the top bar. The editor switches to white lines on a dark canvas, and the exported structure keeps its white lines with a transparent background.
Can I make structures look hand-drawn?
Yes. Open Settings (the gear button), then turn on Hand-drawn (sketch) under Style. Bonds are rendered with a subtle wobble and labels use a handwriting-style font.
How do I tidy up a messy structure?
Select the part you want to fix, then press the sparkle button in the selection toolbar. Bond lengths and angles are normalised and rings are regularised. To clean up everything, press Ctrl/Cmd+A first.
Are my drawings sent to a server?
No. All drawing, import, and export happens entirely in your browser. The app has no backend server and no login. See our Privacy Policy for details.
My uploaded structures are filling up my Uploads folder. Can I remove them?
Structures added to a design are uploaded to your own Canva media library, which is what allows Canva's own image tools (flip, effects, filters) to work on them. Each upload is named with its molecular formula and a timestamp, for example ChemAtelier C8H10N4O2 20260724_153005, so you can search for "ChemAtelier" in your Uploads to find them all. Please note that deleting an upload that is still used in a design may break the image in that design.
Does the app work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Draw with one finger, pan and zoom with two fingers, and long-press the bond or selection buttons to choose a bond type or selection mode.
The app is not loading or a feature is not working.
Please try reloading the Canva editor first. If the problem persists, email us at contact@chemo-info.com with a description of what happened and we will investigate.
